LANGUAGE

The language used in this initiative can easily be changed based on community input. The purpose behind using a mix of terms including "Gender-Diverse" and "Trans" is to appeal to multiple communities of people who identify outside of the gender that they were assigned at birth. We invite people to be critical of the language and frameworks that are used on this website. Feel free to use any and all of our communication mediums to discuss this and any other concerns you may have (facebok, tumblr, twitter, anonymous forum, email etc.).

Gender Diverse:

Gender Diverse is the main term used because it is meant to include those who exist both inside of, and outside of the western "trans" movement. Like all activism in the west, queer and trans activism can often be dominated by white, middle and upper class people who both intentionally and subconsciously exclude people outside of their own circles.

Another reason we chose the term "Gender Diverse" is because so far, the people involved in coordinating this project are not outside of the western queer and trans movement. Therefore we do not want to misuse or appropriate any terms specific to non-western genders and movements. As this community grows, we hope to have leaders whose ideologies and interests fall outside of western frameworks, who can use the terms that apply to them.

Trans/Transgender:

Although we recognize that this term is associated with a western movement, we chose to keep it in our language because it one of the more commonly understood terms for people who identify outside of the gender that they were assigned at birth. This is because of its wide use in the media, and other publications. It is also a term that many people have come to identify with, and we recognize that it has value in that respect.

We are not attached to any of the terms that we are using on this website, and we are 100% open to using new terms, and changing the name of our group accordingly.
